Everything you need to know about getting to La Union from Manila — by car, bus, or van — plus how to make the most of a day trip or a longer stay in San Juan.
Manila to La Union: Closer Than You Think
One of the most underrated facts about La Union is how close it sits to Metro Manila. Via the Tarlac–Pangasinan–La Union Expressway (TPLEX), the drive from Quezon City to the surf spot in Urbiztondo, San Juan can be completed in as little as three hours on a clear road. Compare that to the five-to-six-hour trip to Batangas beaches, the eight-hour drive to Sagada, or the flight-and-transit required to reach Siargao, and La Union starts to look like Northern Luzon's best-kept secret.
This proximity makes La Union genuinely viable as a day trip from Manila — though most people who come for a day end up wishing they had stayed for the weekend.
Getting There by Car (Recommended)
The Route
From Metro Manila (Quezon City or Makati), take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) north toward Pampanga. Connect to the Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) and then onto TPLEX heading north. Take the Rosario, La Union exit and follow the national highway north through San Fernando City, then continue along the coastal road to San Juan, La Union.
The full distance is approximately 270 km. With normal traffic and no major stops, you can expect:
- Weekday/early morning departure (before 6 AM): 2.5–3 hours
- Friday evening departure (after 8 PM): 3–3.5 hours
- Saturday morning departure (8–10 AM): 4–5 hours due to Luzon traffic
- Sunday return (3–5 PM): Expect 5+ hours — the southbound weekend crush is real
Toll Costs
Budget approximately ₱700–₱900 in total toll fees for the round trip via NLEX-SCTEX-TPLEX. Bring exact change or load your EasyTrip/Autosweep RFID ahead of time to avoid queues.
Fuel
The round trip covers roughly 540 km. A mid-size sedan will use approximately 35–45 liters of fuel — budget ₱2,500–₱3,500 depending on current fuel prices and your vehicle's efficiency.
Getting There by Bus
Several bus companies run regular services from Metro Manila to La Union:
- Partas: Services from Pasay (Libertad) and Cubao terminal to San Fernando, La Union. Travel time approximately 4–5 hours. Fare ₱400–₱600.
- Farinas Transit: Similar routes and pricing to Partas.
- RCJ Bus Lines: Operates primarily from Cubao.
From the San Fernando bus terminal, take a tricycle or van to San Juan / Urbiztondo — approximately 30 minutes and ₱50–₱100. Alternatively, some buses route directly to San Juan town proper.
Getting There by Van (Fastest Option)
The fastest non-driving option is to book a seat in a Manila-to-La Union tourist van. Several operators run door-to-door service from Manila pickup points to Urbiztondo beach. Typical travel time is 3–3.5 hours, fares range from ₱600–₱900 per person. Book at least a day ahead for weekend services.
Is a Day Trip Worth It?
A day trip to La Union is absolutely doable — but you will spend roughly 6–7 hours in the car and only 5–6 hours at the destination. That's enough time to surf (or watch), have a proper Ilocano lunch at Kabsat La Union, watch the sunset, and head back.
The honest answer: La Union is worth more than a day trip. Two nights gives you Saturday morning surfing, Saturday afternoon exploration, the Saturday sunset and dinner ritual, Sunday morning at the beach, and Sunday brunch before the drive home. That is the complete La Union experience — and it is genuinely one of the best short breaks available to Manila residents.
Tips for a Smooth Trip
Leave before 6 AM for day trips:An early departure maximises your beach time and avoids both the Luzon morning traffic and the midday crowd. You'll arrive by 9 AM with a full day ahead.
Book dinner in advance:If you're arriving on a weekend, book a table at Kabsat La Union before you leave Manila. The restaurant fills quickly on Saturday evenings and you don't want to arrive after a four-hour drive to find a 45-minute wait.
Pack for all conditions:La Union weather is unpredictable. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rain jacket or poncho, and layers for the drive back in air-conditioned vehicles. The beach can be surprisingly breezy in the evenings.
Sunday return strategy:Leave San Juan by 12:00–1:00 PM to hit the Manila southbound traffic at its most manageable. Alternatively, leave after 7 PM and dine at Kabsat while the worst of the traffic clears.
What to Do on a Day Trip
If you have just one day, here's the ideal sequence:
- 9:00 AM: Arrive, check in or drop bags, head straight to the beach
- 10:00 AM–12:00 PM: Morning surf lesson or beach time
- 12:30 PM: Lunch at Kabsat La Union — Bagnet, Tuna Panga, and fresh buko juice
- 2:00–4:30 PM: Explore the beachfront strip, shop local stalls, rest
- 5:00 PM: Sunset at the beach or from a beachfront bar
- 6:00–7:30 PM: Dinner at Kabsat or a quick second round
- 8:00 PM: Head back to Manila
La Union from Manila is one of the best arguments for living in Northern Philippines. Three hours away, a completely different world — and one of the most genuine, least-packaged beach towns in the country. Go at least once. You'll go back.
